Consulting:

Environmental Simulations, Inc. (ESI) was established to provide government and industry with superior groundwater modeling services, software, and training. Groundwater modeling is now a tool routinely employed in environmental projects; however, it takes a skilled analyst to make the most of this technology. A key issue today is the quantitative assessment of model uncertainty. ESI was the first to develop a Monte Carlo risk assessment tool for large-scale groundwater models (Stochastic MODFLOW). Another issue of concern is optimization of remedial strategies. ESI's Groundwater Vistas software was the first MODFLOW interface to employ mathematical optimization techniques and still supports more types of optimization technology than any other modeling program. A third issue that has always challenged modelers is accurately calibrating models. Again, ESI has been at the forefront of calibration technology through the implementation of the pilot point method with regularization and close ties to Dr. John Doherty, author of the popular PEST software.

Environmental Simulations, Inc. is a small business designed to provide clients with cost-effective groundwater modeling services in the following areas:

Site-specific model applications, including groundwater flow, contaminant fate & transport, density-dependent flow (seawater intrusion), and unsaturated flow and transport.

Peer review of modeling studies performed by other consultants or agencies. We can also serve as mentors to your modeling staff.

Software development for environmental modeling and data management in the following languages: FORTRAN, C, C++, Visual Basic.

All consulting is performed by Jim and Doug Rumbaugh. Resumes will be provided on request. Please contact Jim Rumbaugh ( or 610.670.3400 ) for more information.
